I've always been in love with the sea. I wrote Moontide after ten summers of going to Maine to spend time on the graceful, historic windjammers that sail around the Down East islands. The Maine coast is a fascinating place, and the best way to see it is from shipboard. The deck of a schooner at night is one of the most peaceful places on Earth. There is nothing so relaxing, and there are few places as removed from the stress of modern life. If you need to get away from it all, a Maine schooner is the place to go. But... There are fathoms below the familiar surface world, and hauntings swim in the air around us. Every time we remember an event from the past, we are haunted, in a brief, small way. And a memory is so much like fantasy, or immersion in a story...or a dream. All of these realms are linked, existing around and within each other. Sometimes, lost in reverie or remembrance, we get a glimpse of another, perhaps darker, realm.... In Moontide, I've tried to explore the interstices--the places where dreams link up with the past, with hopes and wishes, with all that haunts us. I hope you've read and liked the book, and are enjoying the added dimension of this Web site. If you haven't read it, I do hope that this reflection of it in the virtual realm will intrigue you enough to give it a go. Either way, I'd be very happy to hear your thoughts. I can be reached by email from here. Many thanks to you for visiting! May your seas always be smooth and your sailing fair. |
